Most of the people Paul encountered in Athens were members of two opposing groups, the Epicureans and the Stoics, and both were steeped in godless philosophies. The Epicureans pursued pleasure and were materialistic, while the Stoics rejected pagan idolatry and worshiped one “world god.” Their beliefs were rooted in self-discipline and human reasoning, which they believed led to eternal enlightenment. Simply put: The Epicureans’ goal was to enjoy life, while the Stoics endured it.
As maddening as this all seems, both these groups believed they had found a way to gain a sense of higher knowledge. But in reality, they had missed the opportunity to gain eternal knowledge and salvation.
The pleasures of this world are fleeting. Human reasoning, even the most detailed and insightful thought, cannot deliver the infinite knowledge that is ours through a personal relationship with Christ.
In his address to these two groups, Paul said:
The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. (Acts 17:24-25)
If you are on a quest for knowledge, you do not have to look any further than Jesus Christ. If you want to experience the enlightenment that has stunned the ages, turn to the Lord and seek His will and purpose for your life. He holds the keys to the universe and all that you long to have and experience.
Prayer: Lord, my only desire is to know the fullness of Your love and Truth. As Maker of heaven and earth, You are the source of true life—the only one who can truly and eternally satisfy. So I will seek Your face all my days. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
