QUESTION:

“Why does God command us to pray if He is already in control of everything?”

ANSWER:

Some view prayer as merely aligning with what God has already ordained, while others treat it as persuading God to act. Both views, taken alone, miss the fullness of Biblical Truth. Scripture declares without hesitation that God is sovereign—He “works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, . . .” (Ephesians 1:11). Yet the same Word affirms that He responds to the prayers of His people (see 1 Peter 3:11-12, James 5:16). These are not contradictions but complementary Truths.

Therefore, we must reject two extremes. We must not shrink back in fear of asking God for anything. Nor should we approach Him as though He exists to serve our demands. God is neither distant nor subject to us—He is Lord.

In His sovereignty, God has ordained prayer as a means by which He accomplishes His purposes. Why? Because He desires a relationship with His children. Prayer is not a ritual of obligation but a sacred privilege of communion with the living God.

So trust God fully. Come to Him in humility and obedience. Pray with confidence, knowing that God hears and responds according to His perfect will. And be encouraged: Prayer changes things—because God has decreed that it should.
